Introduction: Each year diarrhoea kills around 525 000 children under five. Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old, and was responsible for the deaths of 370,000 children in 2019. Dysentery accounts for 20-30% of all diarrheal infections in developing countries. As of the first quarter of 2022, 301 cases of gastrointestinal infectious diseases were registered in Mongolia, of which 68.8%, 1.7%, 16.9%, 10.3%, 0.7%, 1.7% were dysentery, food poisoning caused by bacteria, hand, foot and mouth disease (enteroviral infection), salmonellosis, gastroenteritis or diarrhea caused by infection and hepatitis A infection, respectively. Antibiotic resistance of microorganisms is considered an emerging infectious disease. Bacteriologic confirmation of every case of diarrheal infection registered throughout Mongolia is relatively lacking. Therefore, there is an urgent need to effectively implement bacteriological tests in the diagnosis of diarrheal infections. Objective: We aimed to isolate microorganisms from the samples of dysentery patients, confirm the causative agent by bacteriological test and determine its antibiotic sensitivity. Material and method: In April 2020, we collected stool samples from 63 cases hospitalized patients with the diagnosis of “dysentery” at the National Center for Communicable Disease (NCCD), and carried out bacteriology and antibiotic sensitivity tests at the bacteriological laboratory at Institute of Veterinary Medicine. Result: Totally 63 patients included in the study, 41 (65%) were children between the ages of 1 and 5 years. Moreover, 57 (90.5%), 32 (50.7%), 23 (36.5%), 1 (1.6%) and 45 (71.4%) of the patients complained about fever, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsion and abdominal cramping pain, respectively. By physical examination, it was revealed that 14 (22%) of the patients developed bloating and 14 (22%) of them had tenderness at left lower quadrant of abdomen. Furthermore, 54 (85.7%), 21 (33%), 1 (33%), 28 (44%), 34 (54%) and 23 (36.5%) of the them experienced stool with blood, stool with dark green color, stool with mucous, stool with watery consistency, stool with mucus and stool with undigested particles, respectively. Of the total 63 specimens, 42 (66.6%) of the cultures were isolated by bacteriologic test. Furthermore, in 9 (21.4%), 12 (28.5%), 10 (23.8%), 4 ( In 9.5%) and 7 (16.6%) of these cultures, Shigella ssp, E.coli spp, Salmonella spp, coliforms and mixed form of bacterias found respectively. When determining the antibiotic sensitivity of Shigella, E.coli, and Salmonella, it was found that 86-100% were sensitive to Chloramphenicol, Streptomycin, Cefotaxime, Ciprofloxacin, Nitrofurantoin, Gentamicin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline, and 33-61% were resistant to Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Vancomycin, Nalidixic acid, and Erythromycin. Conclusion: 1. According to our research, children aged 1-5 years (65%) were dominantly developed dysentery. In the majority of cases (66.6%) bacteria were cultured and 9 (21.4%) were Shigella spp, 12 (28.5%) were E.coli spp, 10 (23.8%) were Salmonella spp, alone, 4 (9.5%) were coliform and in 7 (16.6%) these bacteria were detected in a mixed form. 2. Shigella spp, E.coli spp and Salmonella spp were 86-100% sensitive to Chloramphenicol, Streptomycin, Cefotaxime, Ciprofloxacin, Nitrofurantoin, Gentamicin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline and 33-61% resistant to Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Vancomycin, Nalidixic acid and Erythromycin.
