Item type:Publication, Quantitative Serum HBsAg and M2BPGi Levels in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis D(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2016-11-25); ; ; ;Uyanga BayarsaikhanSumiya DorjObjectives: Quantification of serum HBsAg has several clinical significances such as acting as a biomarker for the hepatitis D virus (HDV)-RNA level and necroinflammatory activity in HDV infection. The WFA+-M2BP is a new glyco-biomarker for liver fibrosis. The aim of this study was to compare the quantitative HBsAg and M2BPGi levels between groups of HBV infected patients with or without HDV infection. Methods: Totally, 112 consecutive HBsAg carriers with or without HDV infection (median age 36 vs 38) were enrolled in the study. Serum HBsAg and M2BPGi levels were measured using commercial tests. Results: Mean qHBsAg concentrations were 3.8 ±0.6 log IU/mL and 3.5 ±0.8 log IU/mL in the HDV positive and HDV negative HBsAg carriers, respectively (p = 0.02). Yet 45 patients out of 56 HDV positive patients have HBsAg level >2000 IU/mL whereas only 33 patients in the HBV mono infected group had concentrations this high. The mean M2BPGi was a 1.2 cut-off index (COI) in the HDV negative group vs. 2.1 COI in the HDV positive group (p<0.001). Conclusion: The qHBsAg level was higher in HDV positive patients compared with HDV negative subjects. But qHBsAg levels were higher in the HBeAg positive subjects despite the presence of HDV infection. The mean M2BPGi value in the HDV positive group was higher than in HDV negative subjects. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Association Between IL-28B Polymorphism and Clinical Laboratory Features in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis D(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2017-11-25) ;Bayarsaikhan, Uyanga; ; Objectives: We aimed to determine an association between IL-28B rs12989760 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and clinical laboratory parameters in patients with chronic hepatitis D. Methods: A total of 59 patients who were chronically infected with HDV were had their serum tested for the presence of qHBsAg, anti-HBs, HBeAg, anti-HBe, anti-HBc, anti-HCV, anti-HDV IgM, anti-HDV IgG, HDV RNA, HBV DNA and AFP. Liver function tests, coagulation tests and CBC were also performed. IL-28B polymorphism was performed using a TaqMan 5' allelic discrimination assay by real time PCR. Results: Of these 59 patients, 40 patients (67.8 %) carried the rs12979860CC homozygote genotype, 11 patients (18.6%) were rs12979860CC homozygote and 8 patients (13.6%) were rs12979860CT heterozygote. Alkaline phosphatase and direct bilirubin values were higher (p<0.05) and total protein levels were lower (p<0.05) in patients who were homozygotes for the T allele as opposed to the carriers of the C allele. AFP levels were significantly higher (p=0.02) in the rs12979860 TT genotype group. Liver enzymes including AST, ALT and GGT were significantly not higher in patients who carry C allele (p>.05). Conclusion: The most frequent genotype was IL-28B rs12979860CC among patients with chronic hepatitis D. The IL-28B rs12979860 polymorphism was associated with some abnormal liver function test parameters and AFP levels. Additional studies are necessary to understand the immune mechanisms of IL-28B polymorphism in HDV infection. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Prevalence of major noncommunicable diseases and risk factors by region: Findings from the National Screening(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2025-12-26); ;Enkh-Amgalan, Enkhtuguldur; ; Objective: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting for the majority of premature deaths. Mongolia faces a particularly high burden of cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, contributing to over 80% of total deaths. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of major NCDs and associated risk factors among the adult population of Mongolia by region. Methods: This study utilized large-scale screening data from the mass screening program of adults aged over 18 years. Results: A total of 447,409 adults were included in the analyses. High prevalence of NCD risk factors was observed, including smoking (16.6-19.1%), alcohol use (5.9-11.7%), physical inactivity (76%–80%), and insufficient fruit and vegetable intake (63%–79%). Regional comparison showed that the Northern region had the highest rates of smoking (19.2%), alcohol use (13.4%), and obesity (24.7%) (p<0.001). In contrast, Ulaanbaatar reported notably higher rates of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (82.2%–18.5%) compared to other rural regions (p<0.001). Conclusion: NCD risk factors are common across all regions of Mongolia, with clear differences between them. Notably, the urban population has higher rates of stomach and esophageal inflammation and ulcers, likely linked to lifestyle factors and obesity. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurement of Liver Fibrosis in Chronic Hepatitis D: Comparison of Invasive and Non-Invasive Methods(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2019-03-31); ;Dorj, Sumiya ;Jamsranjav, Selenge; Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare non-invasive methods in the detection of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis delta. Methods: Twelve patients with chronic hepatitis delta who visited the Gastroenterology Department at the Intermed Hospital, were studied. Clinical and histological data were evaluated and serum indirect fibrosis markers including AST to ALT ratio, AST-to-Platelet Ratio, Fibrosis-4 index scores were calculated. Serum Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer and liver stiffness measurements were performed in all participants. Results: Histological scoring showed that 16.7%, 41.7% and 41.7% of participants had F2, F3, and F4 stage of liver fibrosis, respectively. All participants were divided into groups; cirrhotic (F4) and non-cirrhotic (F0-F3). The median AST to ALT ratio in cirrhotic vs. noncirrhotic patients was 1.4 vs. 1.1 (p=.67), AST-to-Platelet ratios were 0.7 vs. 1.1 (p=.48), and Fibrosis-4 index scores were 1.8 vs. 1.6 (p=.82) in non-cirrhotic patients. Median Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer levels in the cirrhotic group 1.3 cut-off index vs. 1.4 cut-off index in the non-cirrhotic group (p=.85). The median liver stiffness was 12.6 kPa in cirrhotic patients while 8.1 kPa in non-cirrhotic patients (p=.05). Conclusion: Non-invasive serum markers were less accurate in determining fibrosis in chronic hepatitis delta patients. Liver stiffness measurement was superior to the non-invasive serum markers. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Initial Trials With Susceptibility-Based and Empiric Anti-H. pylori Therapies in Mongolia(Frontiers Media SA, 2019); ; ; ; Background: Mongolia has a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer. We conducted a prospective, randomized, single-blind study to evaluate the efficacy of common regimens in Mongolia and to obtain specimens for susceptibility testing. Methods: Empiric treatments: 270 patients with confirmed H. pylori infection were randomized to receive 10 days clarithromycin-triple therapy (Clari-TT) (n = 90), modified bismuth quadruple therapy (M-BQT) (n = 90), or sequential therapy (ST) (n = 90). A second group of 46 patients received susceptibility-based Clari-TT. H. pylori was cultured from 131 patients and susceptibility testing was performed. H. pylori eradication was confirmed by stool antigen 4 weeks after the therapy. Results: Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis cure rates were 71.1% (95% CI = 61.7-80.5%) for Clari-TT, 87.8% (95% CI = 81-94.6%) for M-BQT, 67.8% (95% CI = 58.1-77.5%) for ST vs. 89.1% (95% CI = 86-98.2%) for susceptibility-based Clari-TT. Per-protocol (PP) analysis results for these therapies were 72.7% (63.4-82%), 89.8% (83.5-96.1%), 68.5% (58.8-78.2%), and 97.6% (89.5-99.8%), respectively. Among 131 cultured H. pylori, resistance rates to amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole were 8.4, 37.4, and 74%, respectively. Conclusion: In Mongolia, the prevalence of H. pylori resistance is high requiring bismuth quadruple therapy or susceptibility-based therapy to obtain acceptable cure rates.Scopus© Citations 12 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Prevalence, characteristics, and virologic correlations of hepatitis delta (D) among patients with hepatitis B surface antigen in Mongolia(National Center for Global Health and Medicine (JST), 2024-04); ;Rokuhara, Akinori ;Sugiyama, Masaya ;Dorj, SumiyaBarsuren, BatnasanClinical and biochemical features of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infections in Mongolia remain largely unknown. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of HDV patients in Mongolia using several markers. The 143 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients were divided into 122 HDV-positive and 21 HDV-negative patients by HDV RNA positivity. Subgroup analysis was performed between hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive and -negative HDV-positive patients. Liver function, quantitative HBsAg (qHBsAg), anti-HDV Immunoglobulin (Ig) M, Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi), hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA level, and HDV RNA level were tested. HDV RNA was positive in 85.3% (122/143) of patients showing anti-HDV IgG. Liver disease activity was higher in HDV-positive patients than in HDV-negative patients. The HDV-positive group included a higher proportion of patients with high qHBsAg and M2BPGi levels (p < 0.001). The positivity rate for anti-HDV IgM was significantly higher in the HDV-positive group (p < 0.001). HDV RNA levels showed an inverse correlation with qHBsAg levels in HBeAg-positive-HDV-positive patients (r = -0.49, p = 0.034), and a positive correlation with qHBsAg levels in HBeAg-negative patients (r = 0.35, p < 0.001). Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA and HDV RNA levels did not show any correlation. M2BPGi levels likewise did not correlate with HDV RNA levels. A high positivity rate for HDV RNA was observed for HBV patients in Mongolia using the highly sensitive HDV RNA assay. The positivity rate for anti-HDV IgM was high in HDV RNA-positive patients. Severity of liver disease and M2BPGi levels were both high in the HDV RNA-positive group.Scopus© Citations 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Risk factors associated with hepatitis D virus infection and preventive strategies in Mongolia(Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health), 2024-05) ;Su, Chien-Wei ;Ochirkhuree, Bayarmaa; ; Ganbold, SaranguaBACKGROUND: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is highly prevalent in Mongolia. We aimed to identify the risk factors associated with HDV infection, propose preventive strategies, and evaluate the outcomes of a 3-year collaborative project between Taiwan and Mongolia. METHODS: In 2016 and 2018, we conducted onsite visits to Mongolia. Mongolian investigators collected questionnaires focusing on risk factors, demographic characteristics, and serum samples for acute HDV infections. Furthermore, 19 Mongolian seed teachers participated in a 1-week workshop on infection control in Taiwan. Subsequently, these seed teachers trained more than 400 medical personnel in Mongolia. To assess secular changes in acute HDV infection, we reviewed the registration data from the National Center for Communicable Disease (NCCD) in Mongolia between 2011 and 2021. RESULTS: Among the 194 Mongolian patients, 108 had dual infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HDV, while 86 had acute hepatitis B (AHB). Patients with HBV/HDV dual infections were older (28.6 vs 25.5 years, p = 0.030) and had lower rates of positive hepatitis B e antigen in their sera, lower rates of serum HBV DNA exceeding 2000 IU/mL, and higher rates of having received dental treatment (59.4% vs 40.5%, p = 0.014) and injection therapy (64.2% vs 44.0%, p = 0.009) compared with those with AHB. Analysis of NCCD data revealed that new HDV infection cases were more prevalent between 2011 and 2015 (111.20 ± 29.79 cases/y) and decreased to 54.67 ± 27.34 cases/y between 2016 and 2021 ( p = 0.010). CONCLUSION: Dental treatment and injections were associated with a higher risk of acute HDV infections in Mongolia. Through collaborative efforts, the incidence rate of HDV infection has declined in recent years.Scopus© Citations 5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
