Item type:Publication, Status of Human Echinococcosis in Western Mongolia(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2019-03-31); ; ;Davgasumberel, Munkhbaatar; Sumiya, GanzorigObjective: The purpose of this study was to identify cases of human echinococcosis in the Bayan-Ulgii, Khovd provinces, to determine their WHO classification by ultrasound and to identify the haplotype in surgically cysts removed. Methods: A total of 1063 people participated in ultrasound screening. Patients who had a positive echinococcosis by ultrasound underwent serologic testing for detection of antibodies for echinococcosis. Results: Ninety people were positive for the liver cystic lesions by ultrasound screening of which 12 cases were newly diagnosed cystic echinococcosis. Four were cystic echinococcosis stages 1-2, five were stage 3, while three were cystic echinococcosis stage 4. Thirty-three patients with previously known echinococcosis stage 2 and alveolar echinococcosis stage 4 were also examined. Out of 29 cystic echinococcosis cases, 24 underwent treatment. Of 24 who underwent treatment, only one was cured. The haplotypes E. canadensis G6/7 and E. granulossus s.s. G1 were confirmed by evaluating the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of mitochondrial DNA in two patients in Bayan-Ulgii. Conclusion: Ninety people were positive for cystic echinococcosis in western Mongolia of which 12 cases were newly diagnosed cases. Of the 12 new cystic echinococcosis cases, 4 were stages 1-2, 5 were stage 3 and 3 were stage 4 by WHO classification. The haplotype in Bayan-Ulgii population were E. canadensis and s.s. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Socioeconomic Factors Related to Nicotine Dependence in Mongolia(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2023-03-22); ;Singh, Pramil ;Peterson, Anne Berit; Objectives: This study is aimed to investigate potential socio-economic risk factors associated with Nicotine Dependence among UB residents. It is important to identify and understand the various elements that may make people more susceptible to the negative health effects of smoking. Methods: We applied a cross-sectional study design to define the level of nicotine dependence on 875 participants. In addition, risk factors associated with nicotine dependence were assessed through a questionnaire survey. Results: Higher nicotine dependence in this study was associated with being a female (OR=1.208), older age groups (OR=1.5-2.9), divorced (OR=1.091), living in a house (OR=1.602), having a high school education level (OR=1.794), not having a regular job (OR=1.137), having a higher alcohol consumption level (OR=1.18-1.62), and age at initiation of smoking at 18 or younger (OR=1.796). Conclusion: According to the results of our research, countries with low and moderate levels of income, such as Mongolia, have a significant problem with high levels of nicotine dependence. In addition to this, it underscores the importance of developing smoking cessation programs that consider the extent of nicotine dependence while placing a greater emphasis on early interventions of the linked factors. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Evaluating Smoking Cessation Counseling Bundle Behavioral Intervention for Mongolian Adults Who Use Nicotine Patches(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2023-03-20); ;Singh, Pramil; ; Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention based on the World Health Organization (WHO) 5A and 5R guidelines in Mongolia who use the Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) patch. The study aims to assess the impact of the intervention on smoking cessation rate. The finding of this study will contribute to the existing literature on smoking cessation interventions and provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of a behavioral approach in a Mongolian population. Methods: In the intervention study, out of total of 806 people interested in the part of this study. The study team excluded their eligibility criteria of the study participant. A sample of 625 people who fulfilled study inclusion criteria received advice about the negative consequences of tobacco. After that, 479 people decided to quit smoking and 41 people were excluded due to health contraindications, and the final sample 454 people began nicotine replacement therapy to quit smoking. Participants in the treatment group received nicotine replacement patches for 28 days, while those in the counseling group received four sessions of behavioral change counseling (5A, 5R). Results: 454 were found to be eligible to take part in the study and were subsequently assigned to one of two groups, with 230 and 224 participants assigned to each group, respectively. In the second month of follow-up, 90 (39.1%) of participants who received NRT patches quit smoking. The group that received NRT + Behavioral intervention was 1.02 times as successful, or 0.7% more effective, than the group that did not receive behavioral intervention (P=0.872). Conclusion: WHO 5A, 5R brief counselling were more effective than group without behavioral intervention for smoking cessation, but difference was insignificant. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Prevalence of Overweight and Obese School-Going Adolescents in Ulaanbaatar and Its Lack of Associated Risk Factors(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2019-06-25); ;Erdenebileg, NasantogtokhObjectives: The high prevalence of overweight and obese adolescents has severe consequences for economic and social development in Mongolia. This study aims to describe the prevalence of obesity and its associated factors among adolescents. Methods: Using the published results of the 2013 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), we determined the prevalence of overweight and obese youth as well as some aspects of their physical activity, alcohol consumption, tobacco usage, and dietary behavior. A total of 5393 students from grade 7-12 students who were normal weight, overweight or obese were studied. Results: Approximately 15% of adolescents were overweight or obese with significant differences in BMI when comparing students in grades 7 to 9 to students in grades 10 to 12 (p= .004). More of the students from grades 7 - 9 were overweight than obese (13.3% vs. 10.7%), while more in grades 10 - 12 were obese (2.1% vs. 1.1%). None of the risk factors available in the GSHS data set were related to being overweight or obese. Conclusion: Using the potential risk factors available in the GSHS data set, none were associated with being overweight or obese. There is a need for better understanding of the social, economic, and physical determinants of the high prevalence of overweight and obese adolescents in Mongolia. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Implementing Attitudes Measurement to Influence Winter Air Pollution Mask Wearing by Pregnant Women in Ulaanbaatar: A Pilot Study(Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, 2017-11-25) ;Wigfall, Clarence; ; ;Warburton, DavidCrano, William D.Objective: The purpose of this study is to provide an evidence based foundation to implement interventions that improve the health of the population of UB, particularly pregnant women and their yet to be born children by reducing the impact of exposure to the ultra-high air pollution levels found in the city. Methods: This is a hospital based cross-sectional survey including 35 pregnant women, 26 doctors and 31 pregnant women participated in focus groups. All participants were selected from Family Health Centers and District Hospital in UB. Results: Pregnant women both lack accurate knowledge about the effects of extreme air pollution and mask wearing and desire to have more knowledge. Health practitioners scored much higher than pregnant women, in general, on knowledge about the health implications of air pollution and the benefits of wearing air masks. Pregnant women report an overall very negative perception about wearing air masks that is more negative than their report about their perceptions of other’s negative attitudes toward those who wear air masks. Conclusion: This pilot study exposes areas that can be used in a complementary manner in the design and implementation of the more detailed full survey that will lead to the design and implementation of the planned intervention. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, A systematic review and meta-analysis of neuroticism and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic(2023) ;Regzedmaa, Enkhtuvshin; ; ; INTRODUCTION: In response to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns about mental health, particularly anxiety levels, have become prominent. This study aims to explore the relationship between neuroticism, a personality trait associated with emotional instability, and anxiety during the COVID-19 outbreak. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the Cochrane Library, HINARI, Google Scholar, and PUBMED, resulting in the identification of 26 relevant papers. The study protocol has been registered with PROSPERO under the number CRD42023452418. Thorough meta-analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis V4 software. RESULTS: Meta-analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between anxiety and neuroticism, with 26 studies supporting this association (OR = 3.213, 95% CI 2.352 to 4.391). The findings underscore the importance of considering personality traits, particularly neuroticism, in understanding psychological responses to major global crises such as the COVID-19 epidemic. DISCUSSION: The observed connection between neuroticism and heightened anxiety levels emphasizes the need for targeted interventions, especially for individuals with high levels of neuroticism. Further research into potential therapeutic approaches for mitigating anxiety consequences in the context of a significant global catastrophe is warranted.
